The Citizenship curriculum at Southend High School for Boys.
Citizenship
A high-quality citizenship education helps to provide pupils with knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to play a full and active part in society. In particular, citizenship education should foster pupils’ keen awareness and understanding of democracy and human rights, government institutions, and how laws are made and upheld. Citizenship should also foster an appreciation for current affairs and an understanding of critical issues such as poverty, climate change, conflict and migration. Citizenship education should provide students with an appreciation of the institutions, challenges and potential for change at a local, national and global level. Teaching should equip pupils with the skills and knowledge to explore political and social issues critically, to weigh evidence, debate and make reasoned arguments. Citizenship education should provide opportunities for students to explore different ways of seeking change and taking action in their communities.

In the classroom
Citizenship students at SHSB develop strong political literacy, enabling them to understand, analyse, and engage thoughtfully with the world around them. They are encouraged to immerse themselves in current affairs and develop an informed awareness of both national and global issues.
Through regular discussion and critical enquiry, students learn to articulate and justify their opinions on complex topics such as climate change, conflict, migration, inequality, and human rights. They are confident in engaging in reasoned debate, considering multiple perspectives, and evaluating evidence before forming judgements.
This creates students who are not only knowledgeable about political and social issues, but who are also active, reflective, and responsible citizens, prepared to participate meaningfully in democratic society.
