Our heritage
For more than 130 years, Southend High School for Boys has combined academic excellence with a strong sense of purpose, character and service.
This enduring identity is reflected in our historic coat of arms, granted in 1934, and in the school motto, Forti Nihil Difficile—traditionally translated as “Nothing is difficult for the brave” (or “To the determined, nothing is difficult”). The motto has long challenged generations of pupils to approach life with courage, resilience and ambition, becoming a defining part of the school’s identity.
Today, we honour that heritage through our vision: With courage and determination, nothing is impossible. While rooted in the spirit of our historic motto, this contemporary expression reflects the qualities we believe enable young people to thrive in a changing world. Courage gives us the confidence to embrace challenge; determination provides the resilience to persevere, grow and succeed.
