History

Curriculum intent

History at Southend High School for Boys seeks to develop students' understanding of how the modern world has been shaped by the people, events and ideas of the past.

Students learn how historians use evidence, evaluate interpretations and construct well-supported arguments. The curriculum encourages curiosity, intellectual independence and an appreciation of how different societies have changed over time.

History helps students understand contemporary issues while developing critical thinking, communication and analytical skills.

The student experience

Students experience History through engaging narratives, source analysis, debate and enquiry. Students explore questions such as: Why do societies change? How should historical figures be judged? What makes a source reliable? Why do wars occur? How does the past influence the present?

Historical literacy, source analysis and extended writing are developed progressively throughout the curriculum.
