The English Department at Southend High School for Boys aims to develop articulate, thoughtful, and critically aware young people who can engage confidently with both language and literature.

Through reading, writing, discussion, and analysis, students develop the skills required to communicate effectively, think independently, and engage meaningfully with the world around them. The department seeks to foster a genuine love of reading and writing while exposing students to diverse literary voices, perspectives, and experiences. Students develop empathy, compassion, and kindness to themselves and others, understanding that English holds a pre-eminent place in education and civilised society.

Students are encouraged to read as writers and write as readers, developing an appreciation of the power, beauty and influence of language. Students understand the value and interconnectedness of what they do in English.
