The Science curriculum at Southend High School for Boys.
Science
Science inspires curiosity about the natural world while equipping students with the knowledge, practical skills and analytical thinking needed to understand it. Through the study of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, students develop scientific literacy, learning how evidence is gathered, theories are tested and scientific ideas evolve.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5, allowing students to build secure foundations before progressing to increasingly complex scientific concepts. Alongside subject knowledge, students develop practical competence, mathematical fluency, problem-solving skills and the confidence to evaluate scientific evidence critically. We aim to develop inquisitive, resilient learners who appreciate the importance of science in modern society and are well prepared for further study and future careers.

In the classroom
Students experience Science through practical investigation, experimentation, collaborative learning and independent enquiry. Lessons combine teacher demonstration, investigative practical work, mathematical application, data analysis and scientific discussion to deepen understanding across Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Students regularly develop and refine their practical skills through required practical activities, learn to communicate scientific ideas accurately and apply their knowledge to unfamiliar contexts. Throughout their studies, they are encouraged to question, evaluate evidence and think critically about the impact of scientific discoveries on society and the wider world.
Year by year
Students establish the core principles that underpin all three scientific disciplines. Topics include:
Cells and organisation
Matter and particles
Forces and motion
Energy
Chemical reactions
Earth and space
Genetics and inheritance
Ecosystems and biodiversity
Electricity and magnetism
Waves and sound
Scientific enquiry and practical investigation
Students develop their understanding of living organisms through topics including:
Cell Biology
Organisation
Infection and Response
Bioenergetics
Homeostasis and Response
Inheritance, Variation and Evolution
Ecology
Students explore the structure and behaviour of matter through topics including:
Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
Bonding, Structure and Properties
Quantitative Chemistry
Chemical Changes
Energy Changes
Rates of Reaction and Equilibrium
Organic Chemistry
Chemical Analysis
Atmospheric Chemistry
Using Resources
Students investigate the laws governing the universe through topics including:
Energy
Electricity
Particle Model of Matter
Atomic Structure
Forces
Waves
Magnetism and Electromagnetism
Space Physics
Students choosing A Level Biology, Chemistry or Physics build upon GCSE foundations through increasingly specialised study, advanced practical work and independent scientific investigation. Across all three subjects, students develop higher-level analytical, mathematical and investigative skills in preparation for university study and careers in science, medicine, engineering and research.
How pupils are assessed
Assessment is varied and designed to support learning throughout each key stage. Students complete:
Required practical investigations
Knowledge retrieval and low-stakes quizzes
Data analysis and interpretation
Mathematical application
Extended examination questions
End-of-topic assessments
Mock examinations
Practical endorsement (A Level)
Assessment enables students to monitor their progress while developing the scientific thinking and examination skills required for success.

Beyond lessons
Students are encouraged to extend their learning beyond the classroom through a range of enrichment activities, including:
Where it leads
Science provides students with highly transferable skills that open pathways into a wide range of careers, including:
The analytical, practical and problem-solving skills developed through Science are highly valued across both STEM and non-STEM professions.
